What Do You Practice? Just in Time Advising Lesson for the New Year

The beginning of 2018 brings that ever present question… what are your New Year’s Resolutions? We all know that goal setting is important. At the same time, maybe this year try this new twist – set an intention about your mindset. Shout out to Bob Hetzel for sharing this video clip and the wisdom of this wise sage. The video clip is just over two minutes long. Below is a short and easy lesson to use with large or small groups of students/colleagues.

Large or Small Group Audience (grade level/division or advisory/homeroom) Minimum 7-10 minutes.

  1. Connect New Year with the idea of a fresh start for success. Instead of simply thinking about another New Year’s Resolution, let’s try a new twist this year – New Year’s Mindset. In this short clip, a young wise man challenges us about what we practice in our thinking. Ask the audience to listen closely for one practice they most see in themselves. (1 min)
  2. Watch the video (2 min)
  3. Shoulder Share: With someone next to you share the practice you most related to in yourself.  THEN, share what positive mindset you would like to practice this year that would improve you as a person.  (3 min)
  4. Positive Wrap-up to share: Mahatma Gandhi said: “If you want to change the world, start with yourself.” Best wishes for a positive mindset in 2018!
